DIY – How to Dye Easter Eggs with Silk – Tie dye

Easter is almost here and it is time to dye Easter eggs again. There are just so many fun ways to dye and decorate Easter Eggs: you can paint them, decoupage, wrap and crackle them or dye eggs with silk!

You need 100% silk for this to work. Make sure you check the labels too that your are not buying polyester, which can look and feel similar. I bought old ties at op shop / secondhand shop where they’re usually pretty cheap.  You want to use bright and colourful ties! You could also use silk from an old blouse or a scarf.  So if you’re rummaging through an op shop, check out some other areas as well.

1. Use white un-cooked eggs and clean eggs before dying

2. Cut silk and cotton fabric into pieces (18cm x 18cm) large enough to wrap around a raw egg.

3. Tightly wrap a raw egg with a piece of silk, making sure the printed side of the material is facing the egg. Secure with a twist tie.

4. Place the silk-wrapped egg in a piece of undyed cotton and secure tightly with another twist-tie.

5. Place egg(s) in a pot. Fill the pot with enough water to cover eggs completely. Add three tablespoons or a little bit more of white vinegar to the water.

6. Bring water to a boil, turn heat down, and simmer for 15 minutes or longer.

7. Remove eggs from water once cooled down.

8. Remove silk from cooled egg.

9. For shiny eggs, wipe with a paper towel dabbed in vegetable oil.
